Understanding microplasticity by slip trace analysis

EBSD-based slip trace analysis

Electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD)-assisted trace analysis during in-situ SEM mechanical testing allows the direct observation of slip and twinning activity at the microscale. Moreover, and contrary to other methods, it can provide statistically sound evidence of the role of the local microstructure, such as the local texture and grain boundary network, on the activation of the different deformation modes. This method provides a unique insight of the plasticity of hexagonal metals, such as titanium, zirconium, cobalt, and magnesium, and their alloys, with key technological applications in the transport, energy and biomedical sectors
